Equila

Description:
The equila is a species of horse which has arisen through magical mutation. They are about twice the size of a normal horse and walk on their hind legs. Their forelegs have developed into primative arms, with the hoof split to form two short, blunt claws. Their tails have increased in size and length, becoming more like a reptile's, in order to balance their forward body weigh when they move. The tail structure is nearly rigid and can move only a little.

Equilas have developed large sets of horns and tusks. These are used to fend off attackers, especially in defence of young foals, but primarily they are for display amongst their own species, with the dominant animals in a herd having the largest tusks and horns.

Equilas are found all over Tymaera, except for in the highest mountain regions and in densely forested areas where the terrain is too difficult for them. In warmer regions they usually have fawn-coloured, short-haired pelts, whilst in colder climes they have long, shaggy greyish fur, occasionally black or white.

They are a gentle species and are used as beasts of burden / mounts by travellers and merchants. Unless trained from a very young age, equilas are of little or no use in battleas cavalry regiments because the niose and smell of battle frightens them, and without training they would not bite and kick like the more conventional war horse.
